Web Directory

As wonderful as the Internet has become, an old-fashioned book can still be easier to use. So, in that spirit, we offer the following Web Directory as a way to help you get started on some new Web-surfing adventures. Listed in this directory are nearly a thousand Web sites, divided into about 140 different categories based on subject matter or general content.

Using the Web Directory is easy. If you are searching for something specific, try to think of where you might find that item in your telephone company's yellow pages. We have organized Web sites using a similar logic here, although the categories are tailored specifically to the Internet. To help you find specific topics, you can also refer to the Contents at the front of this book for a complete list of categories. Once you find a site that looks like it will have what you're looking for, type the URL for that site into the address bar of your Web browser. The URL appears above each listing, and usually starts with something like http://www . See Appendix A to learn more about URLs than you ever cared to know.

You'll also find this entire Web Directory on this book's CD-ROM as an HTML document. This means you can click any URL in theHTML version and be instantly transported to the sites youchoose. What could be easier? See Appendix C for more information on the Internet Bible CD-ROM and how to use it.

In addition to Web sites, we also include numerous newsgroups in this directory where we felt they were both appropriate and valuable. See Chapter 31 for more information on how to use a news client.

One caveat we will mention is that the ever-changing nature ofthe Internet means that some URLs in this directory may no longer work when you read this. If you cannot find a Web site listed here, try searching for it at one of the Web sites listed under "Search Engines."

However you choose to take advantage of it, this directory should prove to be both as valuable and entertaining as your journey across the World Wide Web. Happy surfing!
